To be eligible for a licence, you must:
What are the training requirements in Ontario?
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services requires a 40-hour curriculum. This includes an Introduction to the Security Industry and covers the Private Security and Investigative Services Act and Ministry Code of Conduct, basic security procedures, report writing, health and safety, emergency response preparation, Canadian legal aspects, legal authorities, effective communication, sensitivity training, use of force theory, and emergency-level first aid.
What do I need to schedule my Ministry exam?
You will need your Training Completion number to write the final Ministry exam in your town or city by Serco DES Inc., the same place where you are tested for your Ontario driver’s licence. Upon completion of your 40-hour course, you will be issued a personal identification number and directions on booking your test. Your PIN becomes your licence number upon completion of your final Ministry test. A passing grade for this test is 62%.
Is online training recognized by the Ministry?
Yes, as long as it conforms to the regulatory requirements. This program is based on the Ontario guidelines that the Ministry has provided and will qualify you to write your Ministry exam.
Can students take first aid online?
No. The first aid training is largely practical and is taken through instructors with recognized credentials such as St. John’s or Red Cross. It is usually an 8-hour day in a traditional classroom setting. No matter where you are located, there will be a class available for this portion of the training somewhere near you. The cost of the first aid component is approximately $60 to $95 and must include CPR/AED in the certification. We have a link designed to help you with your booking at an approved facility close to you.
How does the online training work?
Students access the online classroom and complete online lessons. Lessons include videos, learning activities and resources. The lesson text is read to students, and each section has an online test to make sure students know the material they are being taught. Students also participate in online discussions and can get help from instructors and support specialists. Support is provided 7 days a week so students can get their questions answered easily by friendly, helpful, knowledgeable support staff.
When can I get started?
Once you complete the student registration, O.S.G.T.C. will process it. Once your registration has been processed, you will receive a link to our training site with your username and password, along with your instructions on how to get started.
How long do I have access to the course?
365 days from the date of registration – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
How thoroughly is the course material presented?
Our goal is to give security professionals all the tools they need to succeed in an easy-to-use, student-friendly format. Since the program is assessment based, you will take a number of practice tests and quizzes, helping you identify your weak areas so you can study to pass the test.
Is online training as effective as traditional in-class training?
Yes. In fact, it has been proven to be more effective in some cases. Although you are not physically in a brick-and-mortar classroom, you train in an online or “virtual” classroom. If you are taking a Security Guard Basic Training course utilizing our TrilliumTraining.com site, we utilize several different testing approaches to learning that are student focused. This includes a multimedia approach to learning, as well as testing along each step of the way to ensure that you understand the material being taught.
